What are disinfectants?

Disinfectants are agents that destroy pathogenic microorganisms. Examples of chemical disinfectants are alcohols, iodine, chlorine-based disinfectants, disinfectants based on quaternary ammonium compounds (benzalkonium chloride) and a host of others.
